Family Violence

Family violence takes a terrible toll on women in the Northwest Territories. The rate of spousal assault is nine times the national average. Five women were murdered between December 2011 and December 2012.

On any given day in Canada 8,256 women and children seek safety from family violence by going to shelters, 58 of them in the NWT.

YWCA Yellowknife is responding to these horrifying numbers by providing shelter services at Alison McAteer House, staffing a 24 hour crisis line, working with other NWT shelters to create a network of support, taking an active role in the NWT Coalition Against Family Violence and lobbying for a national plan on violence against women.

Join us for two annual public campaigns highlighting violence against women. The NWT Week Without Violence is held in October, and the YWCA Canada Rose Campaign takes place in December.
