The YWCA’s Project Child Recovery is a proactive program working to promote alternatives to aggression and prevent violence in the lives of our community’s children. Whether violence is happening at home, in school, or in the community, it is an issue all children are faced with. Project Child Recovery can ensure children and youth who have experienced violence will receive the support and services they need.
Project Child Recovery is a free program accessible for all youth ages 6 to 14 through schools and partner agencies.

In a safe, supportive peer group we will:

  • Build an understanding of what a healthy relationship is
  • Identify sources of support
  • Model and teach non violence
  • Increase problem solving and social skills
  • Discover healthy family dynamics
  • Address beliefs and attitudes about violence
  • Discover individual self-image and gain confidence

How is Project Child Recovery helping kids in our community?

  • Project Child Recovery staff worked with 32 children in Yellowknife schools during the 2010-11 year.
  • In partnership with other community agencies in the summer of 2011, Project Child Recovery staff worked with 81 youth to learn about healthy relationships and build self-esteem.
  • Project Child Recovery is also working with children who stay at our family violence shelter, Alison McAteer House, with their mothers. Last year 170 children stayed at the shelter.
