Status of YWCA NWT programs and facilities (As of Thursday, July 16, 2020)

 

Family Violence Shelters – Alison McAteer House (Yellowknife) and Sutherland House (Fort Smith) OPEN

Both family violence shelters ARE OPEN for women who are experiencing violence. If you are experiencing violence, please call the YWCA NWT Crisis Line at 1 (866) 223-7775.  In our shelters, we have taken extra precautions to keep staff and women safe including additional cleaning and disinfection practices, mandatory face masks and other protective equipment and where possible, encouraging physical distancing to help ensure safety of our clients and YWCA NWT staff. You will be provided with a face mask upon entering the shelter. 

Transitional and Emergency Housing OPEN

Housing staff are available to assist clients in our transitional and emergency housing programs and are performing intake and home visits in line with guidelines from the Chief Medical Health Officer. If you are in need of supplies, food, or toiletries, contact the YWCA NWT housing staff at 1 (867) 873-5760.  

YWCA NWT Family Centre 

Programming at the YWCA NWT Family Centre is closed. However, the toy lending library is now open. In addition, planned outings are now taking place. Check The YWCA NWT Family Centre Facebook page for updates and outing registration. 

After-school Care CLOSED FOR SUMMER

After-school care at Yellowknife schools coincides with the school year. The GNWT has released its plan for reopening school safely this fall, for the 2020-21 school year. After-school care in Yellowknife will begin again when schools reopen. and if schools open in late August. Full day childcare currently being provided to essential workers will end on July 31, 2020.

Youth Programs & Outings 

Project Child Recovery is now hosting summer events. Check Facebook for registration and schedule.
