Status of YWCA NWT programs and facilities (As of Thursday, April 23, 2020 10:00 a.m.)
Family Violence Shelters – Alison McAteer House (Yellowknife) and Sutherland House (Fort Smith) OPEN
Both family violence shelters remain open for women who are experiencing violence. If you are experiencing violence, please call the YWCA NWT Crisis Line at 1 (866) 223-7775. You do NOT need to call 8-1-1 to get a special exemption to the territorial health orders, and will not be fined for leaving your home to stay in a Family Violence Shelter. In our shelters, we have taken extra precautions to keep staff and women safe including additional cleaning and disinfection practices, mandatory face masks and other protective equipment and where possible, encouraging physical distancing to help ensure safety of our clients and YWCA NWT staff. You will be provided with a face mask upon entering the shelter.
After-school Care CLOSED WITH EXCEPTIONS
After-school care at Yellowknife schools coincides with the school year. Schools in the NWT will remain closed until September 2020 and so will after-school care. Transitional and Emergency Housing OPEN
Housing staff are available to assist clients in our transitional and emergency housing programs. We recognize this may be a challenging time for our clients and continue to work with them to explore options for childcare, housing and access to Employment Insurance and other financial assistance programs. If you need assistance from the Housing staff, call the office at 1 (867) 873-5760. Please don't come to the Housing Office in person. We are working to gather community donations to provide grocery gift cards to families who are food insecure. Donate here.
Lynn's Place, the multi-unit facility for women leaving a violent relationship or who are ready to find stability, remains open. Staff are working hard to ensure staff and clients living at the facility are safe, healthy and protected during this time.
YWCA NWT Family Centre CLOSED
The YWCA NWT Family Centre is closed until further notice.
