NOTICE: After-school childcare at all Yellowknife schools will re-open on Tuesday, May 25. Please read the new requirements below. Thank you for understanding!
As we are a licensed program, we must maintain our safe supervision ratios and cannot operate without the required ten to one staff to child ratios. If we experience staff shortages in any of our programs, we will need to close that program immediately, and the program will no re-open until Public Health has deemed the employee safe to return to work - this may occur with little to no notice and parents and caregivers will be required to pick up their children ASAP if a program is required to close. We have no control over this as it is a requirement of our licensing.
High touch areas will continue to be cleaned regularly, mask wearing is mandatory while indoors, and no parents or guardians are permitted inside during after-school hours. If your child or anyone in your household has any symptoms, take this self-assessment.
Additional rules and policies for YWCA after-school programming for the remainder of the school year include:
No group gatherings or indoor singing at all. These activities may occur outdoors only with distancing in place.
All physical activities must take place outdoors (absolutely no indoor physical activities)
Staff will organize students in forward-facing seating arrangements only. There will be no face-to-face pairings or groupings. Children playing indoors due to weather restrictions will be permitted to parallel play if adhering to the social distancing restrictions.
Masks are mandatory while inside for all students and staff. Staff will call guardians to pick up any child unable or unwilling to keep masks on immediately, no exceptions.
Any student or staff who is symptomatic with ANY symptoms is required to stay at home. There is no such thing as minor or major symptoms anymore. Our after school team will continue to screen children and check temperatures as they arrive at afterschool programming. Any symptomatic children or children that become symptomatic during the program will be required to be picked up immediately, no exceptions. (Please see attached Covid-19 assessment)
If a sibling is symptomatic, all siblings must be kept home from the after school program.
Children must be assessed before returning to the program. Complete a self-assessment through public health and adhere to their instructions.
Thank you for understanding that these additional precautions are for the safety of the children in our care and our staff. We will get through this!
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact one of the coordinators listed below or call 867-873-4293 between
9 am - 2 pm Monday to Friday.
About the YWCA NWT after-school care program
The after-school program is available at all Yellowknife schools. Staff provide a wide variety of exciting indoor and outdoor activities to keep children engaged and entertained for ages JK - up to age 11. If a child is turning 11 by December 31, they will not be returning to the program in the new year (January). Care is offered from school dismissal until 5:30 p.m. Parents must pick their children up no later than 5:30 p.m. Staff are trained in First Aid and CPR, providing a safe environment for all.
Program costs: $280 for 1st child; $255 for 2nd and $230 for 3rd and subsequent children.
YWCA NWT also offers programming for early dismissal, full day programming for professional development days and March break programs when schools are closed. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to provide children with nut free snacks.
2021-22 School Year Registration
Registration for parents/caregivers with children currently registered in the YWCA after-school program opens Monday, April 12 at 9:00 a.m. and closes Friday, April 22. Pending space availability, registration will open to the public on Monday, May 3. Please note, space is limited and fills up quickly!
To register, e-mail and include the following information:
Child's full name
Date of birth
Grade level in September 2021
Registration will only be accepted via email, and not before these dates/times. Please do not send multiple e-mails as this will only further delay our review and registration process.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Can I also register my other child for JK at the same time I register my 10 year old child? My 10 year old is currently in the after-school program.
On Monday April 12th, 2021 at 9am, we will be accepting pre-registration for the children/families presently attending the YWCA NWT after-school program. We’ll be giving priority to the children presently enrolled before we can extend this to any new intakes (this includes new siblings). You can send their information at the same time as your child who is currently enrolled, but it is not a guarantee they will get a spot. New participants will only be accepted following registration of all existing children in the program and is dependent on space availability.
2. Do I have to pay a deposit the same time I register?
Parents and guardians have until April 22, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. to pre-register their children. Once your e-mail is received, we will reply to you via e-mail to let you know there if there is space available, and will send you a complete registration package by April 23, 2021. You have until April 29 at 5:00 p.m. to return both the registration package and to pay the deposit.
3. How much does the program cost?
The cost is $280 for 1st child; $255 for 2nd and $230 for 3rd and subsequent children.
4. How do I pay the deposit?
All deposits must be paid via e-transfer upon registration. Details on who to send the e-mail transfer to are included in the registration package.
5. My child is not currently enrolled in the after-school program. When do I register?
Pending space availability, registration for children new to the program opens on Monday, May 3 at 9:00 a.m.
6. What e-mail do I send my pre-registration to?
Please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org with your child's name, school, age, date of birth and grade entering in September.
7. I am on a waitlist. How long until I know if my child(ren) will have a space in the program next September?
Each school in Yellowknife has an after-school program, and each wait list is different. Please contact to determine where you are on the wait list.
8. Why doesn't the YWCA just open more spots? There is such a demand for affordable childcare.
The limitation on after school childcare spaces is frustrating for the YWCA too. There are often wait lists at every school, no more available classroom space to be licensed, plus no more staff available. After School care must be licensed, just as day cares are. The Department of Education, Culture and Employment licenses childcare and ultimately determines how many children can be accommodated in the space at hand, what the maximum group size can be, and what the child/caregiver ratio is. Unfortunately for everyone, there are not enough spaces to meet the demand.
9. Can I get a refund on the deposit if we find alternate child care?
Withdrawals from the program require one month's written notice in order to have your deposit refunded. For example, if you are registered to start the program on September 1, 2021, the YWCA NWT must receive your written notice no later than August 1, 2021. Cancellations or withdrawal from the program with less than one month notice will not have their deposits refunded, as we need sufficient notice to fill the space.
